ADVICE ON TRAPPING
Do not attempt to handle the cat:
Use a humane trap only.
You can get advice on how to use the trap by contacting us.
Contact your veterinarian first so that they are aware you will be bringing a feral cat to them to spay/neuter.
Do not let the cat out of the trap.
Make a place indoors where the cat can stay before the appointment and during recovery. Keep the cat in a quiet, safe room. Place the trap on top of plastic garbage bags to protect the surface of your table or floors
Ask your veterinarian to use dissolvable stitches when he/she spays or neuters the cat.
Never leave the trap unattended and never leave the trap outdoors overnight. Cover the trap with a dark colored towel.
Do not remove young kittens from their mother until they are 6 weeks old or older. Tell the vet about the mother and the recent nursing. It is best to spay a mother cat 10 days after the kittens have stopped nursing.
After surgery and one day recovery, return the cat to where you trapped it. Relocating can be dangerous to the cat.
Useful tools to have with you if you plan to trap a feral cat
Several large pop-top cans of tuna, mackerel, sardines or other smelly bait, preferably oil packed.
Can opener if the cans are not pop-top.
Plastic forks or spoons.
Large, brown grocery bag of newspapers to line
the bottom of the traps. Always secure the
newspaper to the traps.
Scotch Tape to hold the newspaper lining
in place.
Dry and canned cat food to leave for cats not trapped.
Water to leave for cats not trapped.
Box of closeable baggies for tuna lids, used plastic silverware, etc.
Small plastic container that is large enough to hold open cans of tuna still in use. It will help prevent spillage.
A full roll of paper towels.
